We are truly excited to introduce Catgut Biothread — one of our absolute favorite materials when tying nymphs that need to look genuinely alive in the water. This material has an almost magical property: when dry it appears opaque, but the moment it gets wet it transforms into a milky, semi-translucent tone that gives the body incredible natural depth.
Because the material is naturally stiff, it can be a bit challenging to work with when dry. Our best tip is to soak it before use. Place the piece you plan to tie with in warm water for 3–5 minutes — this softens the material, makes it easier to handle, and allows the color to reveal its true, lifelike appearance.
A technique we really enjoy is combining multiple strands in different shades. This creates subtle shading in the underbody and adds a level of depth and realism that is hard to beat.
In short, Catgut Biothread is a fantastic material for anyone looking to tie durable, natural-looking bodies for both nymphs and emergers. A true must-have in our tying boxes.
