The classic Walt’s Worm is already a simple and highly effective nymph, but this version features two key upgrades that make it even more deadly in the water.
The first upgrade is the body rib, made from UV Peacock Tinsel, which adds a subtle sparkle and increases visibility in deeper runs or slightly stained water. This understated flash is often just enough to catch the attention of a curious trout or grayling without looking unnatural.
The second improvement is found in the thorax. Instead of a dense, tightly dubbed section behind the bead, this version uses natural squirrel dubbing applied in a dubbing loop or split thread. The material contains a fine blend of soft underfur and stiff guard hairs, giving the fly extra movement and a more open, “buggy” silhouette. As the nymph sinks and drifts along the bottom, the fibers pulse naturally in the current, adding life to an otherwise very simple pattern.
To further enhance this effect, a split-thread technique is used to create a soft, mobile collar. It’s a small detail, but one that really makes the fly come alive — especially when fished as a jig nymph behind rocks or lifted slowly during the drift. That subtle movement often acts as the final trigger, even when fish are selective or inactive.
Tying tip: Pinch off excess fibers so the collar doesn’t become too bulky.
In our experience, this improved version keeps everything that makes the original so effective — simplicity, speed, and versatility — while adding just the right amount of attraction and movement to stand out when conditions are tough.
