When the fish get a little selective, downsizing your fly is often one of the most effective things you can do.
The Black Midge Caddis is exactly the kind of fly I tie on when I'm not quite sure what the fish are feeding on, or when the insects are incredibly small.
Tie this pattern in sizes 16, 18, or 20, and thanks to the Ultra Dry Yarn wing, it sits low in the surface film while offering outstanding flotation.
Ultra Dry Yarn and Klingberg Bug Yarn are two of my absolute favourite materials for tying dry fly wings. If you haven't tried them yet, I can highly recommend giving them a go!
I've included the tying tutorial from Fliesbyaspeen below, along with the complete materials list for anyone who wants to tie up a few of these.
Psst: "Ask the Fly Expert" about "Black Midge Caddis" to get the complete materials list, which stays available as you browse the website!
